1月17日 Playtest and UsabilityFor those of you that arent in the know, theres quite a lengthy process involved with making a (quality) video game title. This should come as a no-brainer to most, but I've noticed some people dont give it all that mcuh thought.
Im proud to say that I've helped (minutely) in this process concerning Microsoft products, services and accessories. How? why through Playtest and Usability studies of course!
Testers are often required to have express knowledge of certain programs. C++, basic understanding of PCs, operating systems, etc. And location is a factor. Microsoft corporation is based out of Redmond, Washington. Due to thise, much of the on-site testing is done on the main MS campus (Redmond). Though from what I've heard, test sessions/labs also take place in Texas.
Usability:
Usability studies seem to be along the lines of quality assurance and focus group tests, where you test their product, by their command, under their supervision in a close environment. Its quite fun, and gives you the chance to have your feedback instantly implemented to see if it works better. In a way, this is a method of voicing your feedback directly to those in charge of this new product/service/accessory.
Playtest:
Playtesting is exactly what it sounds like, but is also a lot like Usability studies.....the only difference I've found is in the number of those used for the study, and the content tested. Playtest seem to involve games mainly, hence the term "playtest", and though you dont have as much of a clear dialogue between you and the team responsible for this new item, its very close to it. The team is there, working with you to better the product based on your feedback.
Once you fill out and submit the "Gamer Enrollment Form" (listed above) - be prepared to wait several weeks - months, before getting word back from anyone who may need you. You'l be asked to answer several questions, and if selected, informed of the test date and gratuity items available via e-mail within several days of the call.
To me, this just proves how devoted the people at MS are to their customers / fans / etc. Any company can form a focus group for their product, but Microsoft truely goes above and beyond whats needed. I hope others have the opportunity to take-part in these studies, both to better your understanding of how these things come together, and to keep the User Research group stocked with eligable testers in the future.
